Price comparison: what the fee row leaves out
The fee row is the exam on its own. NSCA is lowest: $435, or $300 for NSCA members. ACE is $499 and NASM $599. The NCCPT-CPT is $599 plus a $79 Prometric delivery fee.
Add study material and the totals change. As of Oct 2026:
- NASM: packages start from $999 for the Self-Study tier.
- ACE: packages run from $494.50 on sale, plus a separate exam registration ($99).
- NSCA: the textbook is $119; NSCA prices its own bundles on its site.
- ISSA: the course is $868 with the NCCPT-CPT included, plus the $79 Prometric fee.
Retakes vary even more: NSCA (full fee, 30-day wait), ACE ($249 within 1 year of the first attempt), NASM ($199) and the NCCPT-CPT ($99). The full breakdown: personal trainer certification cost.
Myth: “certificate” and “certification” mean the same thing
Two of the four brands sell a look-alike. ACE's open-book ACE Certificate sits next to the ACE CPT exam, and ISSA's course final sits next to the NCCPT-CPT. Only the exam in each pair is NCCA-accredited. When a comparison quotes an open-book or untimed format, check which product it is describing.

ACSM and NCSF are the next CPT exams to join. Their comparisons, NASM vs ACSM first, go live once each exam's facts have been checked against its own handbook.

Comparing CPT certifications
Which personal training certification is most respected?
No one publishes a ranking you can check. What you can check is accreditation: NASM, ACE and NSCA each have an NCCA-accredited exam, and ISSA has one through the NCCPT-CPT.
Which is more respected, NASM or ISSA?
If a job asks for an NCCA-accredited certification, NASM qualifies with its one exam, and ISSA only through the NCCPT-CPT. The full comparison is on NASM vs ISSA.
Which is the best certification for a personal trainer?
The one that matches your job target and how you test. The table above shows format, fees and renewal; our best certification guide turns that into picks by situation.
How do the exam fees compare?
Exam-only: NSCA $435 ($300 for members), ACE $499, NASM $599, NCCPT-CPT $599 plus a $79 Prometric fee. Study packages are extra and change with promotions.
