Personal trainer certification cost, beyond the sticker price

The cost to become a certified personal trainer has three parts: the exam, bought alone or with a study package; a retake if you need one; and renewal on a fixed cycle. All three are below for each exam, with the certifier's page linked. Package prices change with promotions, so each one carries the month we saw it.

Exam, retake and renewal, side by side

Checked 19 Oct 2026 against each certifier's own handbook and website. Exam-only fee in US dollars, as listed by each certifier. NCCPT-CPT (ISSA) is included with the ISSA course or $599 alone, plus a $79 Prometric fee either way. Study packages and textbooks are not included.

Study packages: where most of the money goes

Many candidates buy a package rather than the exam alone, and what the package covers differs by certifier. Prices as of Oct 2026:

  • NASM-CPT: from $999 for the Self-Study tier, exam included.
  • ACE CPT: packages from $494.50 on sale. The exam is not inside: ACE charges a $99 exam registration on top of any study program.
  • ISSA: the CPT course is $868 paid in full, or $1 down, then 11 payments of $97. It includes the NCCPT-CPT exam, but Prometric still charges its $79 delivery fee.
  • NSCA-CPT: the exam is sold on its own. The textbook, Essentials of Personal Training, 3rd ed., is $119 in hardback; NSCA's own bundles are priced on its site.

Promotions come and go every few weeks, so check the price on the certifier's site on the day you buy.

03

The most affordable personal trainer certification

Counting only the exam, NSCA-CPT is the lowest on this sheet: $435, or $300 if you pay for NSCA membership first. ACE is $499; NASM and NCCPT-CPT are both $599, and NCCPT-CPT adds the $79 Prometric fee.

The cheapest route overall depends on how you study:

  • You can learn from a textbook alone: the exam-only purchase plus the certifier's book is the lowest total on paper, for example NSCA's exam plus its $119 textbook.
  • You need a structured course: compare packages by what they include. NASM's include the CPT exam; ACE's need the $99 registration on top; ISSA's course includes NCCPT-CPT but not the Prometric fee.
  • You might need two attempts: add the retake fee to your budget now, because it differs a lot between certifiers.

Myth: “the cheapest exam is the cheapest certification”

A low exam fee stops being low if you sit it twice. NSCA charges the full fee again ($435 for non-members) after waiting 30 days. ACE's retake is $249 within 1 year of the first attempt. NASM's retest is $199. An NCCPT-CPT retake is $99 plus the Prometric fee again. Renewal repeats for as long as you hold the credential.

04

Is there a free personal trainer certification?

Not among the accredited ones on this sheet: every exam here has a fee, and so does renewal. What you can get free is the preparation: the certifier's published exam content outline, practice questions (each exam here has a free practice test), and in some gyms an employer who pays the exam fee after hiring you. If an online offer says “free certification”, check whether it's an accredited exam or a course certificate.

05

The fastest route, in calendar terms

Your study time sets the pace. NASM estimates about 10–15 weeks for its own course, and ISSA says its course can take as little as 3 months. The purchase window sets the deadline: 180 days on NASM, 120 days on NSCA, 12 months from purchase for NCCPT-CPT. Book a date when you buy and work backward from it; a missed window can cost a fee on its own.

Certification cost: quick answers

Is NASM or ISSA cheaper?

On the exam alone NASM is cheaper: $599, against $599 plus a $79 Prometric fee for ISSA's accredited NCCPT-CPT. With study material it flips: as of Oct 2026 the ISSA course ($868, NCCPT-CPT included, Prometric fee extra) costs less than NASM's cheapest package (from $999 for the Self-Study tier). See NASM vs ISSA.

How much does it cost to renew a personal trainer certification?

NASM: every 2 years, 2.0 CEU and a $99 fee. ISSA: 20 CEUs and a $99 fee every 2 years, the fee waived if all 20 CEUs are ISSA courses. NSCA: 6.0 CEUs per 2024–2026 cycle, plus a recertification fee that is lower for members. ACE's cycle, credits and fee are in the table above. Continuing-education courses cost extra.

How long does it take to get certified as a personal trainer?

As long as your study takes, inside the window your purchase gives you: 180 days on NASM or 120 days on NSCA, for example. The exam itself is one sitting.

Is it worth paying for a personal trainer certification?

If you want to work in a gym, usually yes: many employers ask for an NCCA-accredited certification before they hire. See which ones qualify on the NCCA list.
