Format: how many questions, how long

The exam is 120 multiple-choice questions with 4 options each, and you have 2 hours. 20 of those questions are pretest items being tested for future forms. They don't count toward your score, and they are scattered through the exam with nothing to mark them out. So treat every question as if it counts.

That works out to about a minute per question. With an approved accommodation you get 150% of the standard time (3 hours). The handbook makes no mention of video or case-study questions, and the exam is closed-book either way.

03

Passing score: what “scaled 70” means

You pass with a scaled 70 on 0–100. The scale converts your raw score so that every exam form needs the same level of performance, whichever form you happen to get. The cut score itself comes from a modified Angoff study by a panel of subject-matter experts.

So nobody can tell you how many questions you can get wrong. The raw cut varies by form, and it isn't published.

The score report is lopsided. If you pass, you see no number at all. If you fail, you get your scaled score and a percentage for each domain. The handbook itself warns that a domain percentage on its own is an inconsistent measure, and that it may not repeat on a retest, because every attempt uses a different form.

Myth: you need 70% of questions right

A scaled 70 is a converted score, not 70% of the questions answered correctly. Sites that quote a fixed number of questions you can miss are guessing. The 20 unscored items alone make that arithmetic impossible.

How hard is the NASM CPT exam?

NASM's handbook doesn't publish a pass rate, and figures quoted elsewhere aren't part of the exam rules. Three facts tell you more about the difficulty:

  • The weight sits on applied work. The largest domain is Exercise Technique & Training Instruction (24%), and Program Design comes second. The blueprint's tasks are verbs such as select, interpret, design and observe, so expect client scenarios rather than bare definitions.
  • Anatomy alone won't carry you. Basic & Applied Sciences and Nutritional Concepts is one domain of six. The NASM-specific models, such as the OPT phases and overhead-squat compensations, come from NASM's own course, and general exercise science won't cover them.
  • Answer everything. The handbook tells candidates to answer every question, and a blank can't score.

To find your weak domains before exam day, use the practice test and filter by domain. For how this exam compares with the other CPT exams, see the best CPT certifications.

Scheduling the exam with PSI

PSI runs the exam for NASM. You book it yourself through the NASM Student Portal (Proctored Exams → PSI). Booking opens about 1–2 business days after you sign up, and slots must be booked at least 24 hours ahead. You choose the test center or live remote proctoring at the same step. For a remote exam you need a working webcam and a room that meets PSI's rules, and the proctor watches you for the whole session.

Reschedule or cancel at least 24 hours ahead. Otherwise PSI charges $50 for a no-show or a late cancellation (a score re-grade is $75). On exam day, bring a government photo ID and your current CPR/AED card. You can't sit the exam without it.

06

Retakes: waiting periods and fee

If you fail, the wait grows with each attempt: 1 week after the 1st fail, 30 days after the 2nd, 1 year after each later fail. Each retest costs $199 (first retest free on the All-Inclusive package). Every attempt is a different exam form, so study the domains where your score report was weak, but don't skip the ones you passed.

07

Eligibility in one line

You need a high-school diploma or GED and a current adult CPR/AED card with hands-on training. There is no minimum age for the exam. Why the CPR card catches people out, and what else to bring: requirements.

08

Renewal: CEUs and the grace period

The certification is valid for 2 years. To renew, you need:

  • 2.0 CEU (20 contact hours) of NASM-approved continuing education. 0.1 CEU of that comes from a current CPR/AED card, and a NASM specialization can count for up to 1.9 CEU.
  • A $99 application fee.

Extra CEUs don't carry over to the next cycle, and applications are randomly audited. If you run late, you get a grace period of 90 days, with an Extension Fee on top of the renewal fee. Miss that too, and you have to retake the exam.

NASM-CPT exam: quick answers

How many questions can you get wrong on the NASM CPT exam?

There is no fixed number. The pass mark is a scaled 70 on 0–100, the raw cut varies by exam form, and 20 items don't count at all.

Is the NASM exam proctored?

Yes, always. You sit it at a PSI test center or online with PSI's live remote proctoring, where a proctor watches you over webcam for the whole session.

How long does it take to become NASM certified?

You have 180 days from purchase to pass. NASM estimates about 10–15 weeks for its course. Once you are eligible, you can book any PSI slot that is at least 24 hours away.

What is the NASM CPT pass rate?

The handbook doesn't publish one, and figures quoted elsewhere, including on NASM's blog, aren't part of the exam rules. Your score on mixed, timed practice sets says more about your own chances.

What happens if I fail the NASM exam?

You get your scaled score and a breakdown by domain. Retake waits grow with each fail: 1 week after the 1st fail, 30 days after the 2nd, 1 year after each later fail. Each retest costs $199.
