Format: what you'll see on screen

  • 155 multiple-choice questions: 140 scored and 15 unscored pretest items, mixed in and unmarked.
  • 3 hours of seat time.
  • 3 (a, b, c) answer options, one best answer. Some items are a short client case, and 25–35 image or video items show an image or a video.
  • Calculator: an on-screen four-function calculator; you can't bring your own.
  • Cognitive mix of the scored items: 33 recall · 62 application · 45 analysis.

Domain weights and what each domain covers are on the NSCA-CPT overview.

Cost: exam fee, extension, refunds

The NSCA-CPT exam fee is $435, or $300 for NSCA student and professional members. Membership is a separate purchase, so check its price before joining only for the exam discount.

  • Retake: the full fee again. NSCA doesn't discount retakes.
  • Extension: $100 for one extra 120 days, requested inside the first window.
  • Withdrawal: refund minus a $50 administrative fee, if you withdraw before scheduling.
  • Rescheduling: free through Pearson VUE inside your window, at least one business day (24 h) before the appointment.
  • Study material isn't included: Essentials of Personal Training, 3rd ed. lists at $119 in hardback or $89 as an ebook, and NSCA's own bundles are priced on nsca.com.

How this compares with NASM, ACE and ISSA: personal trainer certification cost.

Registering and booking with Pearson VUE

  1. Register and pay on NSCA's site.
  2. Pearson VUE emails scheduling instructions 10–15 minutes after you register with NSCA; book at pearsonvue.com/NSCA or by phone.
  3. Sit the exam within 120 days of registering. If you can't, extend before the window closes (see Cost above).
  4. Bring an ID that matches the name you registered with; NSCA requires the two to match.

There's no at-home option for this exam: it's Pearson VUE test centers only (live remote proctoring is offered for the TSAC-F, not the CPT).

05

Passing score and pass rate

To pass you need a scaled 70 or higher. NSCA converts your raw score to a scale so the standard stays the same across exam versions, which means the raw score that equals a scaled 70 changes from form to form. No fixed number of correct answers guarantees a pass.

You get your result on the spot, before you leave the test center. The report shows your raw score and how you did by domain, and NSCA itself says to read the domain figures with caution because they rest on few items.

Pass rate: 72% in 2019 (1,089 candidates), last figure in a handbook; NSCA posts newer rates each spring at NSCA.com/nsca-exam-report.

Myth: “70 means 70% correct”

NSCA's handbook says it outright: scaled scoring is not a percentage and not a curve. Anyone quoting a fixed percentage needed to pass the NSCA-CPT is guessing.

06

Retakes

  • Wait at least 30 days from your last attempt. You can't even register before then.
  • Pay the full exam fee again.
  • You get three consecutive attempts, then a one-year wait from the most recent test date.
  • You don't resubmit eligibility documents unless your CPR/AED has lapsed.
07

Eligibility and the CPR/AED rule

Who can sit it: anyone 18 or older with a high-school diploma or equivalent. No degree, no prior certification.

The rule to check twice is the CPR/AED card. It has to be a current CPR/AED certification that includes a hands-on skills assessment; a course with no in-person skills check won't be accepted. Exam results stay valid for one calendar year, and your documentation has to arrive within a year of passing, or you aren't certified.

Renewal: CEUs and the 2024–2026 cycle

Certified Jan 1 – Jun 30, 20261.0 CEU · $35 / $60H26
Certified Jul 1 – Dec 31, 20260 CEUs · no feeH26

NSCA renews everyone on one calendar, not three years from your pass date. The current cycle is 2024–2026 and closes on December 31, 2026; the table shows how the CEU count and fee shrink if you certified partway through it. Two ways to renew: report CEUs and pay the fee, or retake and pass the exam.

  • CEU math: 1 contact hour = 0.1 CEU; 1 semester credit = 0.5 CEU; 1 quarter credit = 0.3 CEU.
  • Spread them out: where CEUs are required, they must come from at least two categories, earned after your certification date or the start of the cycle, whichever is later.
  • Two NSCA credentials: one set of CEUs covers both if you certified in both before 2024.
  • CPR/AED must stay current all cycle. You can renew it online only if it never lapsed; after a lapse, the course has to be in person.
  • Miss the deadline: you lose the credential; NSCA may reinstate on request for $200 plus unpaid fees, otherwise you retake the exam (two or more missed cycles: retake only).

NSCA-CPT exam facts, quick answers

How much does the NSCA-CPT exam cost?

$435 for non-members and $300 for NSCA members. Retakes cost the same, and extending your testing window is extra.

How many CEUs do I need to renew the NSCA-CPT?

6.0 CEUs per three-year cycle if you certified before 2024, fewer if you certified during the current 2024–2026 cycle. Everyone renews by the same date, the end of the cycle.

Is the NSCA-CPT exam given by Pearson VUE?

Yes. You register and pay with NSCA, Pearson VUE emails you scheduling instructions, and you book a seat at one of its test centers. There's no at-home option for the CPT.

What is the NSCA-CPT pass rate?

The latest figure printed in an NSCA handbook is 72% (2019). NSCA publishes updated rates each spring on its exam report page; we haven't been able to check the latest one directly, so we don't quote it.

Does an online CPR course count for the NSCA-CPT?

Only if it includes a hands-on skills assessment. A course done fully online, with no in-person skills check, isn't accepted for eligibility.
